A high end spindle should provide many thousands of hours of operation with only routine replacement of wear parts (gripper assembly, etc.). However, a single crash can result in a very expensive rebuild. Many of the faster spindles use ceramic bearings that can run faster but are more susceptible to impact induced failure. Contamination is another big culprit.

I work for a company (HST) that repairs motorized high speed spindles and I want to thank you for your article. Your article was indeed insightful, appreciate it. Maybe I can get one of our repair techs on here to see what he thinks.

I have been doing some marketing for a spindle repair company and have been looking for some insight as to how these things break.
