We're working on an article on the spare parts market for TMW and are wondering what any of you machinists out there have to say about it.

If you had to wait 90 days for a part on your 15 year old machine, would that deter you from buying a new machine from the same brand? Where does it become viable for a grey market provider to step in? What’s your approach if you can’t get the part in a timely fashion? Can you make the part yourself (like on a wire EDM)? Have you done that, or would you rather look for the part on an old machine? Have you thought of making one old machine just a source for parts (only viable if have a lot of other machines like it)?

Feel free to post some thought here but we'd love to speak to you guys one on one to get your perspective on negotiating for spare parts when needed.

I know this isn't the same as 'machine' parts, but I when I got into the machining end of manufacturing, I was shocked at the delivery times for screw machine tools. Its much much better, but I can't imagine waiting 90 days for a part now, in 2009? In the age of email, overnight delivery, drive-thru windows and mobile phones on every belt buckle (I assume everyone else is still wearing belt buckles), if I can't get something quick, I usually look for somewhere esle to get it.

Screw machine tools is where we're seeing some of the most interesting stories in terms of delays.

Yes it is unbelievable that people see such delays on parts in this day and age but machine tools as always are an interesting market in terms of how you maintain and work with your equipment. It takes a lot of time and attention to detail to get things running smoothly.
