Does anybody's shop use cameras to monitor employees? Has it made an impact on productivity?

I was in a shop that did that about 10 years ago, and it didn't make a big difference in terms of productivity. Most of the machinists I've worked with are focused on what they're doing while at work, almost to a fault.

Cameras can have an inverse effect of discouraging a feeling of belonging to a team, and instead produce a gap between management and workforce. But I guess if a shop is seeing problems in productivity and feels cameras will remedy that, then it makes sense.

I once had an idea that a webcam, shooting a frame every few seconds, could show activity to customers without showing trade secrets, and could let clients know how their projects are progressing.
The idea did not sell in my company.

I wish we had gotten our cameras sooner. We found out, after we fired him, that we had one employee practically terrorizing the others. We didn't know, he was fine around us. The cameras did come in handy with a customer though. We're a small shop, and people can just walk in. A customer came in, looked around, and took his part without letting anyone know. We had him "up close and personal" in case he returned and demanded his part- which we would have had to replace if we hadn't filmed him in action.

Wow, those are wild stories cmac.
Yeah I've heard of violence in some machine shops.
What was he doing to terrorize the others?
And that customer is pretty daring. So bizarre.
