I am in the process of setting my mills in their new home and have both machines leveled. I have been trying to get the heads trammed in. In the X axis the heads are trammed at .0003 and the Y axis is about .0005 with the Indicol and dial set to extend as far out as it will reach on both axis. I am completely happy with my cnc set where it is, but my manual mill I would prefer to be .0000 since it will be used for more accurate work.

When you guys tram the head on your mills, where do you consider "good enough"?

All I have to work with is the 40 year old, worn out Bridgeport the company gave me to use. And since the previous "machinist" dug ugly tracks and holes all over the table, I'm lucky to have more than a couple square inches of flat, smooth table for my indicator to ride on.

I typically get about .0003. That takes upwards of an HOUR of frustration sometimes. It's also why I almost never move the head out of square.

I usually shoot for .0000 in X & Y. Very important is to use an indicator that repeats otherwise you will be chasing your tail. The head will sometimes move when the bolts are tightned so allow for this. After the head is trammed also tram the vise for paralleism to the table. Do not use a Bridgeport vise as they tend to flex when tightned. Use a Kurt or Chick vise. The supply houses all have a twin indicator setup for tramming. I have never tried it as I do just fine with my Starrett 196 indicator. Use the largest dia. tip & contact the table just enough to get a reading.
