I am in need of a tool grinding company that has extensive experience grinding carbide rough and finish gun reamers to perform in 15-5 stainless @ 35 Rockwell. The straight flute, 4-flute gun reamers we use today have steel bodies with brazed in C2 carbide. They are required to produce a 32 finish or better and be able to hold .001 to .002 total tolerance. Some of these tools have only 1 diameter and a chamfer, others have multiple diameters and chamfers and possibly a spotface to help in controlling the linear dimensions as tool controlled. The style tools we are currently using are the same design style we have been using for over 20 years. They work OK in aluminum, but not as well in stainless or titanium. At times we struggle with getting the tools to cut the correct diameter and at the same time produce a 32 finish. If the finish is good, then the diameter usually comes out OK. If the finish is rough and the tool is dragging or rubbing from not having a perfect grind it tends to cut on the high side. If we make some of the smaller diameter tools out of solid carbide we do OK, but we often need diameters above 1.250. Does anyone have a solution for better made, newer styles and better grinds for making gun reamers?
