The Denver Post last month had this profile of a newly formed machine shop off to a strong start despite the recession:

They say manufacturing in Colorado appears strong, and despite the fact that they've had to make certain sacrifices, the owners say they still would have started the shop if they'd known of the coming recession a year ago.

Would you start a new job shop in this climate? Maybe it's the perfect time!

Well what do they manufacture there? Guns to blow your head off with? In that case, I'd understand why they are doing so well in this climate!

I know of several startups going on right now. The axiom is that a recession is the best time to start a new business because rent is cheap, people are available and customers are looking for value and not as complaceent as they are in good times.

My son is starting a new venture and has picked up four clients in two months. My friend Stanley is starting a medical laundry behind his retail laundromat. He has had a trouble nailing down financing but finally landed a line of credit from a branch of a large regional bank.

Just because business stinks now does not mean it always will.

    Folks,
I started Harding Enterprises last year and earned $1000 doing some CAD/CAM and trouble-shooting. I have a tiny lathe and mill so I can make small stuff to order
I don't expect to make millions, but I have been noticed as a creative problem solver. I like to make things work more than I hate things that are broken.
Start your business, work hard, and you will succeed.
