What is everyone's feeling about music in machine shops? I know some shops let machinists listen to whatever music they want while working, as watching a part spin can get a little tedious at times, while others say it interferes with the precise nature of establishing workholding and CNC programming, and thus ban music in the shop altogether.

In our shop we have settled on a compromise; the radio is set to a lite FM channel and stays there, and if customers come in the shop it goes off.

We use lite FM at workstations, just no stacks of CDs :). Then more time is sent on the CD player than the machine...

Yeah, you don't want the workshop to disintegrate into a battle of musical tastes or anything. If music is played it shops probably best to keep it uniform. Also if it's too abrasive it could be a dangerous distraction from the work.

    LOL, true Masters.

Maybe machines shops should just have Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed and The Man Machine by Kraftwerk on permanent repeat shuffle.

I don't know who these bands are you're talking about but a little Bob Seger mixed with a little Acee Deucee (AC/DC) would suit my boat just fine.

No worries MasterSullivan, Mr. Yoss has just been looking through his father's old CREEM Magazine collection.

FM Rock in the afternoon and Bob&Tom in the morning is how most machine shops I know do it.

I was distracted by music when I was drilling a .015" hole in some solid nickel parts and I complained to the security team to turn the music off.
They did and I finished the run.
Later I heard that some old fart in the toolroom had the music shut off. I was 23 at the time. I guess I've been an old fart for a long time.

We have classical music playing in the shop. It does not seem to disrupt anyone's concentration. Not evryone is a big fan of classical music, but all agree that is better than having hard rock blasting away.

Classical music is probably a good compromise. It provides some musical background but is non-interruptive.

Musical tastes are ingrained in one's youth. My plant has a lot of Sam Cooke and Aretha. I love it when my preferences are R.E.S.P.E.C.T.ed.

    Nice, Charles.
Are you playing specific albums by those artists or just Motown radio?

Some solid picks Lloyd. Bruce might prove a bit distracting in a machine shop though.
