Hey everybody, WESTEC is coming up fast; it's about a month away. Who's going; is anyone going? What are you excited about there? If you're not going, why not? Does geographic proximity determine your decision?

Hi. I am not going this year, so as a result I'm not excited about anything there! If it were closer to where I lived and the curriculum were engaging I would go, but as it is now, I cannot. I would be excited about making the connections and talking with other people in my situation to whom I can relate. To answer your question, geographic proximity does determine my decision this time around. It's simply to far away for me to attend. Hopefully something like that can happen around here, but for now I have to be patient and I guess prepare! But the forum like this makes up for it! 8-)

So where are you Masters that WESTEC is too far?
You are right that a forum like this can serve as a replacement for being unable to attend a trade show. You can network with other machinists and manufacturers, survey equipment and learn about the industry from the comfort of your own home!

I currently reside in Michigan, which is a state in the USA. If it weren't for Lake Michigan, my state would border Illinois and Wisconsin to the west.

Westec isa nice show. It has shrunk significantly in recent years to half the size of a decade ago. This year it will shrink again. It is basically the California show. The state is reeling but aerospace military and medical still have life.
I have come to belie ve these shows have more value for the builders than for the users, The builders get a chance to check out the opposition, schmooze with distributors, reunite with field service guys and prospect for new employees. For Haas, Westec is virtually aq fiefdom. They regard it as the home field advantage.
The virtual show is a concept which is almost there, You will be able to get a real time tour and even ask questions online with a roving video camera as your surrogate. Saves time and dough. I do not know if it is available at this year's Westec but talk to the guys at Todays Machining World about possibilities at PMTS in Columbus at the end of April.

Yeah, when I was at WESTEC back in 2005 and '06 I saw a lot of end users at demos making actual orders and using the show as their dream machinery shop, but I bet it's a much different picture this year.

I've been off and on in past years; am not planning on going this year for the same reason as a lot of people I suspect; travel budget (almost nonexistent to begin with) cut in my company. It's funny how WESTEC has shrunk over the years; anyone remember when it had to be held in multiple facilities? Now it's just the one floor and the basement, with some events in nearby conference rooms. Actually it might be smaller than that this year.
