Although I have run CNC machines and have done a little programming of them, I am entrenched in manual mills and lathes and wouldn't have it any other way for the stuff I do. So my thoughts are geared to the unit operations of the machining world and manual machines.

Has anyone ever proposed a broach - like tool for parting off pieces in the lathe?

I'm thinking about rather large diameter pieces where there is quite a good range of being on center with the tool and in reality not being on center which is where a multi-tooth broaching cut-off tool would be working as it made chips.

The chip load would then be divided across two teeth and perhaps the cutting would go easier and faster???

This idea would need a bit more thought, but it may have merit.

    Has it been done?

  2. Bold thinking is good, not easily understood, but good. :)
I think I'd need to see a sketch of this idea.

  3. After re-reading this post I think I understand where you're going. Would this be a formed parting tool, combining the shape of the part with the parting operation?
