I recently read a comment where someone said 'the only reason to have a patent' is if you can afford to defend it. Most of my (and my customers) blueprints and CAD files have extensive notes claiming exclusive rights to the drawings and technical information. However, I'm wondering if the average shop can afford to protect it's intellectual property in the international marketplace anymore, and if so, what is the cost?

What if instead of giving all the bailout money to the reckless, untrustworthy banks and incompetent automakers our government just gave the money to the people? I’m not talking about 500 dollar “stimulus” checks. Say all of this aid money, maybe about $10,000,000,000 ($10 trillion!), was distributed to 100 million tax paying units in the U.S.? The people – our people, rich and poor, would get $100,000 each, and surly they would do some awesome things to stimulate the economy. Think about what people might use the money for – cars, houses, college educations, stocks, bonds, starting new businesses – not to mention depositing the money in the bank. So the banks would get their liquid too! What if people got half that amount, a quarter? What would you do with $25,000?

Personally, I’m very skeptical that the recipients of the current bailout plan are going to use the money wisely. Like so many people, I am scared that they will not learn from their mistakes. I fear we may be throwing our hard earned dollars into a black hole.

I say let the people fix the economy!

According to this website, the history of commercial machine tools in the United States will be 200 years old in 2019 based on an early patent. Does anyone have any earlier dates?

The advantage of this screw machine patent http://alturl.com/2fm2 was to drill the holes from the bottom to expedite chip removal. It seems like a simple idea to me. But it makes me wonder if the days of entrepreneurs turning these simple non-computer related ideas into a business are still a reality today?

I had a couple great discussions with vendors (Mobil Oil & Razorform). That's the "Wow". I also had a really nice visit at the TMW booth, but overall, the small crowd made me feel like my drive down to Columbus,OH from Detroit was really to a little town in Canada somewhere. That's the "Ow".

Westec is coming up soon and the machine tool builders are sending out their press releases like people really care. Is anybody really going to show up this year besides the exhibitors, the trade press, and a smattering of students? The SME should make up a virtual video tour and put it on the Web. It would definitely save on parking.

with all the auction fliers I receive, the machining industry is being thinned down considerably during this cycle. how many machining facilities are the "right number" to remain? will this be enough when and if the manufacturing sector picks back up to support them? if not, where will this support come from?

Maybe I've been reading too much Daniel Silva or Vince Flynn mystery fiction, but I think it is conce[vable the U.S. and the rest of the world may be the victim of a brilliantly executed financial sabotage. One could argue that Al Qaeda or Iran or Putin with the aid ofateam of renegade investment bankers knew which string to pull to unravel the big overleveraged banks after their greed and stupidity put them in great jeopardy. After things started to go bad with the help of a Bush hating press they launched a massive Bear market play to exacerbate the chaos.

They ccould make a colossal fortune but shorting the market and buying puts on the banks if they were intimately familiar with the vulnerabilities.

This financial chaos weakens the country. What if they followed up with a Manhattan subway attack. Scary.

Any thoughts?
